When Gustavo Gutiérrez delivered the lecture "Towards a Theology of Liberation" in July 1968 in the Peruvian city of Chimbote, ahead of the Second General Assembly of Latin American Bishops, and published this text in a significantly expanded form as a book titled "Theology of Liberation: Perspectives" in December 1971, he had no idea of the lasting impact this publication would have.
