Not only can we not face the rest of the world while we consume and pollute as we do, but we also cannot long look ourselves in the face while acknowledging the violence and chaos in which we live. The choice is clear: either we do nothing and allow a miserable and likely catastrophic future to descend upon us, or we use our knowledge of human behavior to create a social environment in which we can lead productive and creative lives without jeopardizing the chances for those who come after us to do the same.
