Terrorism not only spreads fear and terror, but it also exerts a great fascination, especially when the observer feels secure at a distance. This ambivalence is reflected, not least, in the different public reactions to new and old terrorism. In the 21st century, terrorist attacks continuously dominate the headlines, and the reports that once kept the Federal Republic on edge for nearly three decades, featuring the Red Army Faction, the June 2 Movement, and the Revolutionary Cells, have been replaced by the horrifying news from al-Qaeda and other organizations. The fascination that the RAF still seems to exert in this country, particularly among younger people, is indeed unsettling, yet hardly surprising given the often romanticized portrayal in literature.
