In his book, Zygmunt Bauman looks behind the scenes of our globalized present. His thesis strikes at the core of modern rationality: one - if not the central - result of modernization processes is the exclusion of people from social, national, and cultural contexts. Placeless migrants, refugees, and those deemed "superfluous" - their fate manifests the fact that the development of modern societies, in economic and political terms, does not consist of the integration of all. On the contrary: modernity has a highly selective impact; deprivation is its distinctive characteristic. Bauman illustrates how exclusion goes hand in hand with modernization and globalization. When the entire world is captured by economic rationality, there is no longer a place that embodies the economic.
