At 19, Hana vows eternal virginity in northern Albania. She follows the old Albanian custom of "Kanun" because she does not want to enter into a marriage arranged by her uncle. Surrounded by animals, the forest, the mountains, and her sick uncle, she becomes Mark Doda. After her uncle's death—fourteen years later—Hana/Mark flies to America to visit her cousin Lila.
