Worldwide, cities are the scene of diverse social conflicts. In light of urban conflicts over rent increases, the displacement of marginalized populations, the surveillance of public spaces, and the privatization of infrastructure, the interest of the social sciences in the topic of "city" has also grown. Particularly in the Anglo-American context, a critical urban geography has developed, which can now look back on extensive theoretical and empirical work. The starting point of this now highly differentiated critical urban geography is to understand urban conditions not as given, but as historical and changeable. Building on this understanding, the volume aims to introduce students to central concepts and empirical applications of critical urban geography in an overview format.
