Product details
The "forgotten colony" in German East Africa, established not primarily out of imperialistic intentions but out of necessity to create markets and channel emigration, was not a success story. Wars, uprisings, famines, all coupled with chronic financial difficulties and constant competition with the much more prominent colony in German South West Africa, ultimately led to terrible losses in World War I until capitulation in 1918. In this book from 1892, not much of this can be felt yet. Written just seven years after the acquisition of the territories, it is marked by the euphoria of finally - far too late - emulating the English and establishing colonies in distant lands. The author lovingly and meticulously describes how the "acquisition" of the colony took place, the nature of La.
