For centuries, people have struggled with the establishment of laws of art, and even the correctness of these insights hardly promoted practical aesthetics. They did not provide the support against dire temptations nor the bright drive to revere the sanctuary. The laws, even those that were correctly recognized, were of no help. If they could be condensed into a concise, universally valid form, then creation did not require genius. They are so loosely woven that any attempt to reach an appreciation or creation of art purely through legal means always exposes us to the danger of falling through the gaps. One can only approach art more personally through comparative observation. How this or that individual fulfilled the law, how another came closer to the goal through a different path with a sacrifice or an ingredient, and how then again the successor combined the first with the second to form a third—this observation exercises us.
