From the friendly village of Mayenfeld, a footpath leads through green, tree-rich fields to the foot of the heights that look down seriously and grandly into the valley from this side. Where the footpath begins to rise, heathland soon starts to greet the traveler with short grass and robust mountain herbs, as the path steeply and directly ascends towards the Alps. On this narrow mountain trail, on a bright, sunny June morning, a large, strong-looking girl from this mountainous region was climbing up, leading a child by the hand, whose cheeks were so flushed that they illuminated the child's sunburned, completely brown skin with a fiery red glow. It was no wonder: despite the hot June sun, the child was bundled up as if to defend against a bitter frost. The little girl could hardly be five years old; however, it was impossible to discern her natural shape.
