Our use of language allows us to distinguish between symptoms and inhibitions in the description of pathological phenomena, but it does not place much value on this distinction. If we did not encounter cases of illness that we must state show only inhibitions and no symptoms, and if we did not want to know what the condition for this is, we would hardly have the interest to differentiate between the terms inhibition and symptom. The two have not grown from the same ground. Inhibition has a special relationship to function and does not necessarily mean something pathological; one can also refer to a normal limitation of a function as an inhibition of it.
