In the realm of legend, the first accounts of the beautifully situated capital of Bohemia, the golden Prague, begin to emerge. A fragrant touch of poetry weaves around its founding story, which inspired Clemens Brentano's dramatic poem "The Founding of Prague." The most common interpretation of the place name is linked to the strong-minded daughter of Krok, Libuše, who sends her subjects to establish a new settlement on the left bank of the Vltava River. The name of the settlement is to be determined by what the messengers first see there. Thus, the threshold (Práh), where Libuše's messengers found two men at work, became significant in the formation of the city's name. Serious research derives it from praziti = to burn, roast, evidently in light of the analogy with many German place names, whose endings -brand, -rode, or -reut likely reflect the fact of clearing a forest.
