This book introduces new standards into the architectural debate: What defines the quality of architecture? It is an old-fashioned question in light of the cult surrounding the flamboyant stars of the global architecture scene. However, buildings are not constructed for just one season; poor architecture remains a nuisance for decades. For Georg and Dorothea Franck, there are criteria by which the quality of a building can be assessed: its relationship to the surroundings, its functionality, and its sensory appeal. It is not a matter of randomness which designs meet these requirements. Knowledge of canonical models plays at least as significant a role as a keen awareness of the rules of modern society.
