Norbert Miller, born in 1937 in Munich, studied literature and musicology as well as art history in Frankfurt am Main and Berlin. From 1962 to 1965, he worked as an assistant at the University of Frankfurt am Main. Starting in 1973, Miller held a chair in Comparative Literature at the Technical University of Berlin and served as the managing director of the history of philosophy, literature, science, and technology until 2004. He has been emeritus since 2006. He is a co-editor of the journal Language in the Technological Age and the Munich edition of Goethe's works. As an author, he published several works including "Der Wanderer. Goethe in Italien" in 2002, "Die ungeheure Gewalt der Musik. Goethe und seine Komponisten" in 2009, and most recently "Fonthill-Abbey. Die dunkle Welt des William Beckford" in 2012.
