Initially met with fierce opposition in his homeland of Yugoslavia, Danilo Kiš soon became recognized as one of the greatest storytellers of post-war European literature. With his unique literary work, he wrote against forgetting and death. In his trilogy "Early Sorrows," "Garden, Ashes," and "Hourglass," which he also referred to as "Family Circus," he created a monument to his father, who was murdered in Auschwitz, and to the culture of Central Europe. His "Encyclopedia of the Dead," now finally available in a new translation, has become his most famous book. On the occasion of his 25th death anniversary, his most important works are being published in a single volume - an invitation to read this author again and anew.
