Herta Müller, born and raised in Romania, tells the story of a young woman who is regularly summoned for interrogation by the secret police. On her way there, while riding the tram, she reflects on her life. She recalls her childhood in a small town, her relationship with her father, and her marriage to the son of the man responsible for the deportation of her grandparents. On this day, the driver does not stop at the station where she needs to get off. And so, for the first time, she does not go to the interrogation.
