In prose pieces and poems, Yves Bonnefoy, one of the most important contemporary poets in France, revisits lifelong themes: language, naming, and childhood. He approaches them with greater concentration, emphasis, and also playfulness than before. At the center, as is often the case with Bonnefoy, are poetry (in the form of Baudelaire, Verlaine, and Mallarmé), architecture (embodied by Leon Battista Alberti), and painting (represented by Adam Elsheimer's famous "Mockery of Ceres" and three paintings by Poussin).
