Product details
Before the eastward transport to Auschwitz, Willi Weber is able to wall up the poems of his wife Ilse in a tool shed—poems and songs she wrote for her fellow inmates and her foster children. Willi survives and is able to secure the papers after liberation: the accounts of her life as a Jewess in Moravia, the letters in which she recounts the terror of National Socialism, the comforting songs from the children's ward in the concentration camp. The book brings to light for the first time the charismatic figure of Ilse Weber, who has become a myth among survivors of Theresienstadt and in literature, yet whose work has remained largely unknown until now.
