From the two Roman provinces of Germania Inferior and Germania Superior, nearly 5,000 personal names are known through epigraphic evidence. Were these names always inscribed correctly by the ancient stone masons? Is the transmitted text of now-lost grave and dedication inscriptions always accurate? Do the readings of still extant tituli match? Are all the inscription stones that have come down to us relics from antiquity, or are there also forgeries? Based on clearly incorrectly inscribed or transmitted personal names, this study offers new interpretative proposals for some so-called hapax legomena, personal names that are only attested once.
