Product details

In the western desert of Egypt, the chain of the four Arabic-speaking oases Bahariyya, Farafira, Dakhla, and Kharga stretches, whose dialects have not yet been comprehensively published. These are of great interest to Arabic dialectology, as they show significant relationships to Maghrebi Arabic as well as numerous unique developments in the morpho-syntactic area. The series 'Egyptian Dialects' will summarize and make accessible all the extensive material collected so far. The first volume deals with the Bahariyya oasis, the northernmost of the oases, and includes a detailed dialectological introduction that explains the relationships to the dialects of the Nile Valley and to the other oases, a grammatical sketch, and a collection of texts in transcription and translation. The sketch is based on the dialect of East Bahariyya (Mandisa) but also indicates the deviations of the central (Bawiti) and western dialects (Gasir). It addresses the essential facts of phonology, morphology, and some striking points of syntax. The texts offer several fairy tales as well as ethnologically interesting material about daily life as it was about 30 years ago. Given the rapid developments in recent years, they present a picture from a bygone era.
