In "The Christian Warrior in Lombard Italy," Andrea Stabel analyzes the influence of Christianization on the self-representation of Lombard warriors. By examining 63 graves and 21 individual finds from Italy (568-7th century), it becomes evident that Christian symbols such as gold leaf crosses, belts, or spurs primarily served as communicative means in elite graves. Their symbolism reflects social roles, status, and proximity to Christian power centers. The study also highlights the influence of late antique traditions, the significance of burial forms, and regional differences. The results demonstrate that Christian markers in warrior graves evolved from a sporadic practice to a widespread phenomenon—a development closely linked to the political consolidation and Romanization of the Lombards.
