Mysticism has many faces. The believer, seized by the reality of God, can see his God as the all-powerful Creator or the All-Knowing One, as the Lord to whom he owes obedience as a slave and property, or as the Just, the Merciful, the Omnipresent. He can also see Him as the One and Only, the God beside whom there is no other God, the God before whom everything that is not Him sinks into insignificance, into the shadow of reality, into the unreal, the non-existent, and ultimately into nothingness.
