The Polish writer and journalist Hanna Krall has made it her mission to interview some of the last eyewitnesses of the almost completely destroyed Eastern European Jewish community, as well as survivors of the Holocaust. In a way, she collects memories and shapes them into literary reports. As the generation of primary eyewitnesses fades with the passage of time, the fixation of memory becomes a crucial building block for collective Holocaust remembrance. The work also aims to demonstrate the impact that the genre of literary reportage can have on the construction of memories in literature. The author consistently succeeds in weaving the researched facts together into an aesthetic whole using narrative, stylistic, and rhetorical techniques, without idealizing the suffering of the victims.
