Product details

The prominent Orientalist Julius Klaproth maintained an extensive correspondence. A significant portion of the material went to the St. Petersburg Academy after Klaproth's death and has hardly been utilized in research so far. This volume publishes for the first time the correspondence with individual correspondents; among them are the Academy President and later Minister of Culture S.S. Uvarov, the sinologist and Germanist Heinrich Kurz, the inventor and printer Paul Schilling von Canstadt, the sinologist Stanislas Julien, the St. Petersburg Orientalist Christian Daniel Frähn, the Japan researcher Philipp Franz von Siebold, the geographer Karl Ritter, the historian Karl Friedrich Neumann, Alexander von Humboldt, and others. The correspondence with the Academy's secretary provides details about Klaproth's commissioned travels. This first publication makes previously unknown material accessible, offering new insights into Klaproth's working methods and character, as well as the relationships within the international scholarly community.
