Since its first edition in 1895, Rudolf-Ernst Brünnow's Arabic Chrestomathy from Prose Writers has been a popular tool for introducing classical Arabic. Twenty years after the release of the seventh edition, the opportunity arose for a new edition. The text excerpts are accompanied by various comments on grammatical, lexical, and cultural details. These comments are primarily intended as an educational aid for students from the third semester onward. Nevertheless, important modern concepts in Arabic studies and Semitic studies are referenced, taking into account aspects of native Arabic grammatical theory. Fischer's Grammar of Classical Arabic is regularly cited, as well as Wright's Grammar of the Arabic Language. Important specialized treatises are also referenced.
