Product details

The Chinese minority in Indonesia has historically suffered from intense assimilation pressure under the Suharto regime. Systematic persecutions occurred repeatedly, with the riots in May 1998 marking a tragic peak in recent history. However, this period also represents a turning point: with the onset of democratization following Suharto's resignation, ethnic Chinese Indonesians were once again able to publicly embrace their Chinese identity. Various anthologies of a seemingly non-existent Chinese-language literature were published, and a Chinese press was reestablished. The study examines, through numerous short stories by a diverse range of authors and a detailed analysis of the press, how the minority renegotiates its cultural identity. Christine Winkelmann demonstrates that the supposed return to cultural values from the homeland of China is more about the active construction of a Chinese-Indonesian identity, which can only be understood in the context of historical and social conditions. Thus, the book provides fascinating insights into the cultural life of the minority and traces how, in line with recent findings from Cultural Studies, identities are constructed, negotiated, and defined.
