Product details
The Indo-Aryan language Shina, spoken in northern Pakistan, has been the subject of linguistic and Indological research since G. Bailey's grammar published in 1924. It was not until the 1960s that more or less successful attempts were made to write Shina down. Based on preliminary work by M. A. Zia and D. L. R. Lorimer, this volume contains over 500 proverbs in the Gilgit variant of Shina, each presented in Shina with a German translation, as well as approximately 200 additional short texts on folk beliefs. The texts on folk beliefs include materials on customs, interpretations of everyday phenomena, and folk medicine. They complement the content of the proverbs and also provide a picture of traditional culture in Gilgit on their own. The texts are organized by thematic groups and are accompanied by a Shina-German glossary, a short grammar, and an index. Numerous parallels from neighboring cultures are cited alongside the proverbs. This volume presents the most extensive corpus of Shina texts published outside of Pakistan in a scholarly format.
