Product details

The Elephantine Stele of Sethnacht, discovered in 1971, is crucial for reconstructing the history of the 20th Dynasty. Historical evidence from the period of transition from the 19th to the 20th Dynasty is extremely sparse, and although the succession of rulers in the 19th Dynasty had already been clarified, the events leading to the establishment of the 20th Dynasty under Sethnacht could only be understood through the discovery of the stele and the interpretation of its text. Based on this new text, which is translated, commented on, and interpreted, and thoroughly compared with the historical section of Papyrus Harris I 75, Rosemarie Drenkhahn presents the historical events at the end of the 19th Dynasty. The examination of the inscriptive and archaeological evidence concerning the four main figures of this period - Siptah, Tausret, Chancellor Bay, and Sethnacht - yields new insights into the personal and political relationships among Siptah, Tausret, and Bay, as well as the background of Sethnacht's rise to power and the military conflict with his opponent.
