The book addresses representations of Saint Thecla from Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Images of Egyptian provenance are predominant, which may be related to the particular zeal of the Egyptians for Thecla and the apocryphal Acts. The focus is on the interpretations of the images; the literary tradition of the Thecla legend is given special consideration. Since the cult of Thecla replaced ancient cults, it also explores the issues surrounding the relationship between antiquity and Christianity.
