Small town - an empty square, hardly a soul in sight, if there are any, they are old people or youths, no attractions, vacant downtown shops, slow decay, at best the charm of the morbid. One only passes through here by chance and wonders: Who is here when I am not, and why? The still valid definition of a small town by the Imperial Statistical Office from 1887 cites a population of 5,000 to 20,000 as its demographic characteristic. After the Monalisas of the suburbs, where the world ended, Ute and Werner Mahler chose the exploration of the small town as their fourth joint project. Since 2015, they have been traveling through Germany with a small car, a large camera, and a supply of black-and-white sheet film, in search of images that document the mood, the way of life, and the spirit of these places.
