Moritz is not particularly interested in why his older brother Maik collects class lists with foreign names with his friends. His heart beats for bats, a passion that the Chinese girl Hua from his neighboring class also shares. However, things happen that make Moritz thoughtful: while on vacation in Tenerife, he meets a refugee boy from Africa. When this boy is apprehended and set to be sent back to his home country, Moritz is shocked. He also wonders if Hua might be in danger as well. Back in Germany, Moritz quickly hides his friend on his grandmother's strawberry farm. Of course, Maik, whose xenophobic remarks and activities Moritz no longer finds acceptable, must not know anything about it!
