City and landscape - these terms generally represent a pair of opposites. The urban environment, with its built spaces and squares, is delineated from nature, with its natural landscapes and clearings. However, contemporary landscape architecture examines both as a system and reveals the seemingly opposing developments in their interdependence. In light of massive changes to ecological systems, as well as increasing migration and the spread of unplanned settlements, landscape architecture also faces global challenges. The catalog serves as a plea for a new positioning of the discipline. Through specific projects from around the world, innovative yet complex approaches are presented.
