Product details
Six nights, four walls, two strangers, one question:
Should one hold a person's hand when everything is coming to an end – a person who does not deserve it? Young bank employee Meta is searching for meaning. Through her volunteer work, she finds herself in a nursing home that has seen better days. As a night watch, she is to spend her nights beside the patient Mr. T. Because: Mr. T. screams as soon as it gets dark. He screams when he is alone. Meta is ready to turn to Mr. T. She keeps vigil every night, even though she doesn’t know what lies behind the screams. The living area is filled with peculiar characters: Doctor Pomp, who is always searching for his missing stethoscope, Mrs. Else – a patient – whose mysterious affinity for strawberries makes Meta ponder, and Moses, the caregiver, who cannot admit how much he is attached to everything here. Moses is Meta's refuge when it gets too loud in room number 9.
David Fuchs writes about the complexity of care, up to the point where duty becomes self-neglect. A few nights pass before Moses reveals more about Mr. T. to Meta. More than she ever wanted to know about the man she endures night after night. And suddenly, the ease with which Meta cares for him disappears. It is no longer so simple to sit by his side in the chair. To wish that he does not suffer. The tranquility of their shared midnights is taken away, and Meta can feel the ghosts that haunt her all over her body. Moses and Mrs. Else stand by her, offering advice on how to cope with the new situation. Yet the walls of the home, the walls of the room, grow ever tighter...
About decisions we impose on ourselves. Meta faces a choice that goes against everything she has previously assumed about herself: Should she stay in the home and help, or leave and not return?.
