In 1997, Porsche began production of the fifth generation of the 911 with the Type 996. The latest and largest version of the iconic sports car featured a heavily revised aerodynamic design, particularly in the front and rear, while still retaining the distinctive characteristics of the 911. For the first time, a water-cooled engine powered the rear of the sports car from Zuffenhausen. Like its predecessors, the 996 was offered not only as a coupe but also as a Targa and convertible for all open-top driving enthusiasts. The 420 or 450 hp Turbo completed the model lineup starting in 2000. Regardless of the model from the 996 series, today all 911s built between 1997 and 2005 enjoy cult status and have a loyal following. A well-maintained example in original condition is particularly sought after.
