At the center of this work is the so-called "Austrian Chronicle of the 95 Rulers of Leopold of Vienna," which he composed in the vernacular and prose for Duke Albert III at the end of the 14th century. Its peculiarity lies in a succession of 95 rulers, largely fictional, with which the author traces Austrian history from the biblical patriarchal period to his own time. Given the transmission in more than 80 partially illuminated manuscripts, adaptations, and a significant reception, one wonders: How could such a historiographical accident occur, and why was it apparently so popular?.
