Product details
The concepts of homeland and exile are crucial for understanding Anna Seghers' work. In 1933, she was forced into exile due to persecution by the National Socialists. As a Jewish intellectual and committed communist, she exemplifies many writers who were involuntarily exiled during this time. Her journey took her from Switzerland through France and the United States to Mexico. The works "The Seventh Cross," "Transit," and "The Excursion of the Dead Girls" mark the milestones of this journey, as do numerous speeches and essays, such as "Patriotism" and "Germany and Us." Birgit Ohlsen demonstrates how Anna Seghers' concept of homeland evolves during these years. She explains the aspects of this transformation in six theses, which she supports with numerous references from the relevant texts.
