This book is not only a documentation and chronology of the air war in the area of Steinfurt, Münster, and Osnabrück from 1939 to 1945, but it also vividly describes—supported by eyewitness accounts—life in the towns and villages of the former Steinfurt district during the war. The air raids on the neighboring major cities of Münster and Osnabrück are also documented. The bombing of the strategically important waterways at the Dortmund-Ems Canal near Gelmer and Ladbergen, as well as the Mittelland Canal near Hörstel-Gravenhorst, and the immediate consequences for many places in the present-day Steinfurt district are also mentioned. Noteworthy is the description of the use of the V2 retaliation weapon from the area of Burgsteinfurt, Metelen, Darfeld, Heek, Legden, and other places in the Münsterland starting in the fall of 1944.
