Product details

On August 11, 1957, the illuminated board at the train station square in Zurich read: "The Swiss pilgrims returning from Moscow will arrive in Zurich-Enge tonight at 10:25 PM. How will the Zurich population receive them?" This referred to a group of Swiss men and women returning from the World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow. They had already been targeted in advance, including by the media. As a result, they faced hundreds of demonstrators at the Enge train station, who were there to teach the "traitors" a lesson. The situation escalated, and the returnees were attacked, beaten, and threatened with weapons. Rafael Lutz has systematically examined this event, which has been little more than a footnote in Swiss historiography. It symbolically represents the anti-communism that prevailed in Switzerland at the time, and the outbreak of violence reflects the steadily growing aggression.
