Is helping a universal human phenomenon or a specifically Christian one? Diakonia operates within this tension as a practice of church-based assistance. At the same time, this presents a challenge that a theological theory of helping must address if it wishes to engage in interdisciplinary discourse. Starting from the definition of the fundamental structure of helping as gift and reciprocity, assistance is viewed as a communicative relational event, analyzed from the perspectives of various scientific disciplines, and examined for common intersections. Its theological positioning is found in the act of justification, which enables the overcoming of interpersonal asymmetries, as all participants are both givers and receivers simultaneously.
