Helvetica is a photographic exploration of Switzerland. For over half a decade, Andreas Herzau has repeatedly visited the country, capturing various places, subjects, and people. His focus is not on documentary photography in the traditional sense, but rather on reconciling his own often clichéd perceptions with the reality he encounters. He presents a country that he appreciates for its achievements, even as he soon realizes that it struggles with its own expectations. As a nation of great economic prosperity, bolstered by a long tradition of liberal democracy and political neutrality, there are still strong national defensive reflexes. Herzau navigates the contradictions of the Swiss self-image and reflects on his own role as an outsider. It is precisely these fractures that the photographer directs his gaze towards.
