Freud's own concise summary of his research: Everyone has experiences with anxiety. We often respond to fears with inhibitions, such as through abstaining from or avoiding certain actions. When these reactions become too intense or pathological, Freud refers to it as a symptom – one that can be so severe that external help becomes necessary. Freud's understanding of the phenomenon of anxiety was primarily sharpened through the investigation of repressed impulses of the "id" (that is, the unconscious part whose content consists of drives and affects) of his patients, where the treatment focused on the analytical uncovering of these impulses and their integration into the conscious self.
