Revised new edition edited and arranged by Theodor Borken. First published: Bermann-Fischer/Allert de Lange, Stockholm/Amsterdam 1939. About the Author: Born in 1881 into a wealthy entrepreneurial family in Vienna, Stefan Zweig began publishing his first poems before completing his high school diploma. A rapid writing career lies ahead of him. In 1928 - at the age of 47 - the biography 'Stefan Zweig, the Man and His Work' is published. The latter had already appeared the previous year in a ten-volume edition with an introduction by Maxim Gorky in Russian translation. He is one of the most translated authors of his time, with his works reaching print runs of over 100,000 copies and often being adapted into films. On his 50th birthday, Stefan Zweig reflects: 'Actually, one should have had enough of life by now. What can come next is nothing but decline.' Tragically, he would be proven right. In 1933, he sees the outbreak of National Socialism as a 'prelude to far-reaching interventions.' A year later, he leaves his homeland. In Germany, his books are banned and burned. Zweig initially lives in exile in England, and in 1941, after a stop in New York State, he finally arrives in Brazil, where on February 22, 1942, he 'voluntarily and with a clear mind' ends his life. In his farewell letter, he sees the world of his own language as having perished and his spiritual home, Europe, as destroyed. His final message to his friends concludes with the wish: 'May they still see the dawn after the long night! I, too impatient one.'.
