In the course of anecdotal storytelling about the Bohemian and coffeehouse writer Anton Kuh, who was born in Vienna in 1890, it is often forgotten that he was also an extremely diligent writer and journalist, having published six books and over 1,500 journalistic works during his lifetime. For years, Kuh dedicated his journalistic efforts to the fight against nationalism, militarism, and the rise of the National Socialists. As a perceptive, independent observer and sharp-tongued commentator of his time, he was, as Alfred Kerr described him, the "brain gypsy of Lucian blood," one of the prominent chroniclers of political and cultural life in Vienna and Berlin during the first four decades of the 20th century. Driven into exile by the Nazis, Anton Kuh died in 1941 in New York.
