Product details

Hausvogteiplatz and its surrounding streets form one of the most historically significant districts in the history of European ready-to-wear fashion as well as in Berlin's fashion history. The year 1836 marked the founding of the company "Gebrüder Manheimer," which was the first to produce clothing (coats) in series, heralding the birth of Berlin's ready-to-wear industry. This was soon followed by the establishment of other companies, predominantly owned by Jewish entrepreneurs, including Hermann Gerson and Nathan Israel. With the onset of the Nazi regime, the destruction of the Jewish clothing industry and thus the roots of Berlin's ready-to-wear fashion began. "Brennender Stoff" reflects on the flourishing, the transformation, and the downfall of this once-thriving fashion center.
