In Judaism, there is no other crisis situation that a person can find themselves in that has such a rich tradition of rituals and regulations as mourning. Jewish mourning rites present a counter-model to the widely accepted ways of dealing with loss and grief in today's world. Often, mourners in the modern world find no appropriate space to express their grief and feel they must continue to function according to societal expectations. They retreat into isolation and anonymity with their sorrow. In contrast, Jewish mourning laws protect mourners from isolation and provide them with support. The authors illustrate how, in Judaism, mourners are accompanied through the various phases of the mourning process and reintegrated into the now changed world. Both loss-oriented and restoration-oriented traditions support the grieving process.
