Seriously ill and dying individuals require not only good medical treatment but also multidisciplinary psychosocial, spiritual, and pastoral support. Far too often, our highly technologized and economically driven medicine overlooks the individual and reduces illness to the malfunctioning of an organ or organ system. Additionally, we experience an antisocial climate of societal coldness, where elderly, sick, and frail individuals are increasingly perceived as a burden and pushed to the margins. The centuries-old tradition of Bikkur Cholim as a non-medical psychosocial support, as well as the traditional Jewish understanding of medicine and care, demonstrate how these negative developments can be addressed. In this volume, experts from various disciplines engage with these issues in the context of our modern society.
