This reading book gathers the voices of people who, as children or adolescents, were able to flee to Great Britain in the 1930s to escape Nazi persecution. Most of them arrived in 1938/39 via the Kindertransport from Germany, Austria, Poland, and Czechoslovakia. The excerpts from the conversations are based on interviews conducted by Eva-Maria Thüne in 2017 in Great Britain, mostly in German. The questions about the language shift and experiences in the new culture served as the starting point. However, the responses went far beyond that: they include memories of parents, descriptions of the dramatic journey and arrival, as well as life stories shaped by trauma and rescue.
