Product details
It was indeed a different star on which we lived. These words were written by the Jewish artist Julie Wolfthorn to the women's rights activist Ida Dehmel after Hitler's rise to power. From that moment on, the everyday life of this artist was marked by repression and financial hardship. Through her deportation to Theresienstadt and her subsequent death there, she fell into obscurity for many years. This deliberate act of forgetting by the Nazi regime is responsible for the fact that many Jewish female artists in the art movement of the 20th century have received little attention to this day. Numerous documents about these women and many of their works have been lost or even destroyed. This book presents twelve of these artists. The reconstruction of their lives aims to show what extraordinary painters they were and what courageous lives they once led.
