Product details
Erich H. Jacoby (1903-1979), a Jewish lawyer from Berlin, served as the legal advisor for the railway workers' union and was active in the labor movement of the Weimar Republic. In 1933, he fled from the Nazis through Denmark and Sweden to the Philippines, where he witnessed the exploitation of agricultural workers. After the war, he held a leading position at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome, responsible for land reform issues. He died in Sweden, the only country willing to grant him citizenship after 23 years of statelessness. Jacoby steadfastly opposed oppression and exploitation. His memoirs present a vividly told exile story from the perspective of the Third World, encouraging reflection on fundamental issues of law and justice. The edition includes numerous annotations, accompanying essays, and a comprehensive annotated index of persons.
