Product details

Who knows the author of "Der Vetter aus Dingsda"? Rideamus! Rideamus, Latin for "let us laugh," was the pseudonym of the lawyer Dr. Fritz Oliven (1874-1956). Once one of the most successful German humorists of the first third of the 20th century, a cabaret artist, librettist, and member of the supervisory board of the first GEMA, he is now almost unknown. His humorous books, written in rhyme, such as "Willis Werdegang" or "Die Erfindung der Sittlichkeit," achieved high circulation and were illustrated by popular artists. Together with Oscar Strauss, he created the burlesque operettas "Die lustigen Nibelungen" and "Hugdietrichs Brautfahrt." The satirical undertone and anarchic humor of these works are far removed from the sweetness of later Strauss works. Oliven evolved towards the modern revue theater in 1920s Berlin.
