"Working Days" tells the story from the first-person perspective of a Czech emigrant with Jewish roots, depicting the banal to the bizarre everyday reality of a long-time library director in Berlin. In a weave of autobiography and fiction, past and present, everyday life and dream worlds, thoughts and desires intermingle—historical, professional, familial, and even sexual. The fragments of memory regarding the survival and continuation of the parents, the narrator's own childhood in Czechoslovakia, and the escape and emigration through Romania to Switzerland run like a red thread through the most personal and human aspects of a well-structured daily routine within a clearly defined spatial oscillation in Berlin's rush hour.
